Complications, such as retinal damage during surgery or serious infections (endophthalmitis), are rare.
The main problem is amblyopia. This usually develops in cases with unilateral cataract, especially if the other eye sees very well. The coverage of the healthy eye for some hours during the day in childhood can encourage the use of the operated eye and improve eyesight.
Several months after the surgery derogation of the eye can occur (strabismus) with the worst vision, which will be dealt with proper surgery.
A serious complication that typically occurs several years after a successful cataract surgery is the increasing of the pressure of the eye and the development of glaucoma. Unfortunately in children it is not easy to measure the intraocular pressure without general anesthesia. Thus an increase in the postoperative period can be avoided.
