The first International Cataract Training Course, organized by the Hellenic Institute of Education in Ophthalmology and Athens Eye Hospital, was successfully completed, at the hospital facilities, on 15/6 and 16/6/2012.
The course was carried out in English and was attended by young ophthalmologists from Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Albania, and Greece. Sixty-five ophthalmologists participated in total.
The training course included lectures (Friday, 15/6) by Greek guest ophthalmologists as well as the Athens Eye Hospital doctors. The lectures focused on cataract surgery, ranging from presenting basic knowledge in all stages as well as surgical times, to delving into deeper knowledge, such as complications, special premium intraocular lenses, pediatric cataract, etc. Each subject was thoroughly analyzed and the analysis was followed by discussion.
On Saturday, 16/6, from 9.00 to 20.00, the course offered practical training on cataract surgery. Trainee doctors were divided into two groups, each one practicing in organized wet labs equipped with two surgical microscopes (Zeiss), instruments and two phacoemulsifiers (Millennium B&L), as well as two simulators provided for by the hospital, in order to learn the philosophy behind eye surgery. Finally, the practice rotation included educational videos of special cases and presentation of surgical techniques.
The Hellenic Institute of Education in Ophthalmology and Athens Eye Hospital aim to establish the International Cataract Training Course as an institution, with the participation of even more countries and with the continuous improvement of the training offered to young doctors. Moreover, the institution will be extended to a course on retina and vitreous surgery.
