Customised intraocular lenses are under development in Athens Eye Hospital
Up to date the lenses that are implanted in the human eye (Intraocular lenses) serve either to substitute the natural lens when it needs to be extracted (cataract) or correct common refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
Athens Eye Hospital has developed the know-how and the technological infrastructure for the development of customised intraocular lenses that will be capable of correcting any optical aberration should this be clinically indicated.
The scientific team of Athens Eye Hospital for the first time in Greece has attempted successful trials of aberration correction in keratoconic eyes and has developed the mathematical framework both for the design of customized (wavefront-guided) intraocular lenses and for the verification of their effectiveness.
