The dysfunction of the retinal blood vessels results in reduced
availability of oxygen, causing ischemia. Prolonged ischemia leads
to the production of a protein called Vascular Endothelial Growth
Factor (VEGF), promoting the creation of new vessels
Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy
The new vessels
(red arrows) take up the area between the retina and the
vitreous. The rupture causes hemorrhage which disturbs vision.

Development of many new vessels in
the area above the optic nerve (purple arrow) as well as the optic disk
(green arrow). The extension to the area of the macula (yellow arrow),
shows a leakage of fluid and lipids which forms a ring of hard exudates
(blue arrows) around the new vessels.
