Adaptive IOLs
are an attempt to mimic
the properties and function of the
normal lens in the eye. Although the
other lenses (Monofocal, multifocal)
remain stationary in the capsular bag,
the adaptive lens moves forward,
thus increasing its refractive power.
In practice the actual results of such
designs are not yet satisfactory.
Tassignon IOLs
are used for cataract extraction in children. It is a
special category of IOL with great advantages, but requires a par-
ticularly difficult technique for its installation.
Apart from the anterior capsulo-
tomy, a posterior capsulotomy
is also performed. While all the
previous lenses are placed by the
surgeon in the capsular bag, the
Tassignon lens with its special
design has the anterior and pos-
terior capsule trapped in its pe-
ripheral groove. This procedure
can be described as
bag-in-the-
lens.
Implanting the Tassignon IOL is
the ideal solution for complicat-
ed cataracts after inflammation and in small children. The surgery is
considered particularly difficult and thus most ophthalmology clinics
do not perform it. Athens Eye Hospital has surgeons, who perform
thousands of cataracts a year in Greece and abroad and is the only
center in Greece that performs this difficult operation with accuracy
and safety, and one of only a few in Europe.
